# 18 Web Sites Warned About Illegal Botox Sales

FDA has warned 18 Web sites that they are illegally marketing unapproved and misbranded botulinum toxin products, commonly called Botox. An agency [notice](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-warns-companies-over-illegal-marketing-botox-and-related-products?ref=fdaweb.com) (contains a link to the Warning Letters) says FDA is aware of adverse events associated with unapproved and misbranded botulinum toxin products, including botulism symptoms.

The notice says FDA-approved botulinum toxin products contain a Boxed Warning indicating the drug carries a significant risk of serious or life-threatening side effects and may cause symptoms of botulism, which attacks the body’s nerves and causes muscle weakness that can lead to difficulty breathing and even death.

The agency says approved botulinum toxin products are only available with a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider, and patients should ensure they only receive the products from a provider who is licensed and trained to administer the injections. It cautions that products obtained from unauthorized sources may be unapproved, misbranded, adulterated, counterfeit, contaminated, improperly stored and transported, ineffective, and/or unsafe.
