$2.4 Billion in Health Care Fraud Judgments, Settlements

A joint HHS/Justice Department Healthcare Fraud and Abuse Control Program won or negotiated over $2.4 billion in healthcare fraud judgments and settlements in FY 2017, according to a just-released report. In FY 2017, the report says, the Justice Department opened 967 new criminal healthcare fraud investigations. Federal prosecutors filed criminal charges in 439 cases involving 720 defendants. A total of 639 defendants were convicted of healthcare fraud-related crimes during the year.

The report includes descriptions of cases involving three medical device companies, five cases involving diagnostic services, four cases involving drug companies, and activities under the FDA Pharmaceutical Fraud Program.
