# 4 Steps to Take FDA Into the Future

Former FDA commissioner **Mark McClellan** and Friends of Cancer Research founder and chair **Ellen Sigal** say there are four things FDA can do to build on what has worked in the past and position itself for a strong future. Writing in an online *Stat* [article](https://www.statnews.com/2020/02/26/fda-in-the-2020s-move-forward-dont-stand-still/?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=bb5a2eb9-27c3-4a82-a856-105c4bdd4b1c&ref=fdaweb.com), McClellan and Sigal highlight emerging opportunities for FDA to fulfill its mission and truly change the lives of patients. They recommend: 

- as scientific advances continue to expand the scope and complexity of products that the agency regulates, FDA needs more resources to support its mission.
- FDA should continue its steps to enable public input and dialog;
- FDA needs more support to modernize how it collects and uses the vastly expanding sources of digital health information; and
- strong leadership that respects the bipartisan support for the agency’s commitment to science-based regulation should continue.
