4 Steps to Take FDA Into the Future

Former FDA commissioner Mark McClellan and Friends of Cancer Research founder and chair Ellen Sigal say there are four things FDA can do to build on what has worked in the past and position itself for a strong future. Writing in an online Stat article, McClellan and Sigal highlight emerging opportunities for FDA to fulfill its mission and truly change the lives of patients. They recommend: 

  •          as scientific advances continue to expand the scope and complexity of products that the agency regulates, FDA needs more resources to support its mission.
  •          FDA should continue its steps to enable public input and dialog;
  •          FDA needs more support to modernize how it collects and uses the vastly expanding sources of digital health information; and
  •          strong leadership that respects the bipartisan support for the agency’s commitment to science-based regulation should continue.
