FDA commissioner **Stephen Hahn** has been asked to provide a progress report on recent steps the agency has taken to combat the opioid crisis. A [1/11 letter](https://www.tn.gov/attorneygeneral/news/2021/1/11/pr21-02.html?ref=fdaweb.com) to Hahn from 48 state attorneys general requests an update on efforts to reduce prescription opioid abuse and accidental deaths using new authorities Congress granted FDA under the 2018 Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act. Those provisions include safer opioid packaging and disposal features, research and issuance of new regulations on non-addictive alternatives to opioids and guidelines for opioid prescribing, the letter says.
