7 Acne Products Recalled for Benzene: FDA

FDA says manufacturers are recalling specific lots of seven acne products after agency testing on 95 products containing benzoyl peroxide indicated possible benzene contamination. “More than 90% of products tested had undetectable or extremely low levels of benzene,” an agency notice says.

The notice indicates the agency initiated independent testing following receipt of third-party testing results submitted to it that raised concerns about elevated benzene levels in certain acne products containing benzoyl peroxide.

The recalls are to the retail level, but not the consumer level, the notice says, meaning that retailers are instructed to remove products from store shelves and online marketplaces, but consumers are not being told to take any action with products they have.
