# 792 Women Demand Maisel’s Resignation Over Essure

> In a [3/7 email](http://www.fdaweb.com/download.php?file=Essure%5FPatients%5FLetter%5Fre%5FMaisel%5F03072016.docx) copied to more than 200 FDA leaders, Capitol Hill figures and news media, 792 women told CDRH chief scientist and deputy director **William Maisel** they are demanding his resignation because they “are outraged that you still believe that Essure is an important, safe, and effective \[birth control\] option for women, given the overwhelming amount of evidence we have presented to you proving otherwise.”

> The letter cited statements reportedly made by Maisel during a 2/29 press conference that the women charge “have made it perfectly clear that you would rather stand by Bayer and Essure regardless of the harm it has inflicted upon thousands of women, infants, and unborn children. At one point a journalist asked you why you hadn’t taken the [BMJ article](http://essureproblems.webs.com/BMJstudysterilres.pdf?ref=fdaweb.com) into consideration. You began to lie and say that it had found the pregnancy rate to be lower with Essure, when in fact it states patients undergoing hysteroscopic sterilization have a SIMILAR risk of unintended pregnancy as laparoscopic sterilization. We have begged and pleaded with you to order unbiased studies and yet you recommended Bayer conduct further studies??

The CDRH has long been plagued with a history of bias toward industry, conflicts of interests, and corruption, and it appears that you are carrying on with this tradition. Providing you with the ability to determine medical health decisions on behalf of women is not only unethical, but greatly puts women’s lives at risk.”
