Abbott Deep Brain Depression Device is Breakthrough Device

FDA has granted breakthrough device designation to an Abbott deep brain stimulation system for use in treatment-resistant depression, which is classified as a form of major depressive disorder. The company says its system is a personalized, adjustable therapy that involves implanting leads into targeted areas of the brain. A pulse generator implanted under the skin in the chest is connected to the leads and produces electrical impulses that the company says can modulate abnormal brain activity.
