Abbott Firmware Update to Address Defibrillator Concerns

FDA has approved an Abbott firmware update for its implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-Ds) due to battery and cybersecurity concerns. The corrective action (recall) is intended to “reduce the risk of patient harm due to premature battery depletion and potential exploitation of cybersecurity vulnerabilities for certain Abbott ICDs and CRT-Ds,” a recall notice says. The firmware update installs a device-based battery performance alert to detect rapid battery depletion and fixes cybersecurity vulnerabilities across Abbott’s radio frequency enabled ICDs and CRT-Ds, the notice says.
