Abbott Withdraws Trifecta Heart Valves

Abbott says it has decided to stop selling its Trifecta heart valves due to the potential risk of early structural valve deterioration (SVD). Earlier this year, FDA issued a letter to healthcare providers about published literature suggesting a “higher cumulative incidence of early (five years or less) SVD for Trifecta valves compared to other commercially available surgical bioprosthetic valves.”

The heart valve replacement devices are intended to treat diseased, damaged, or malfunctioning native or prosthetic aortic valves. Approved in 2011, the first-generation Trifecta is no longer marketed; the Trifecta GT was approved in 2016.
