Act Against Female Infertility Supplements: CSPI
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) says FDA should send Warning Letters to companies marketing 39 dietary supplements that explicitly or implicitly claim to treat female infertility because they are being marketed as unapproved and/or misbranded drugs. In an 11/18 letter, CSPI says the products’ manufacturers were unable to provide it with scientific substantiation of their products’ claims regarding female fertility. It also called on the Federal Trade Commission to pursue legal action against the manufacturers on the basis that the products are misbranded under that commission’s act.
CSPI says it identified 39 women’s fertility supplements, containing a total of 94 ingredients, manufactured by 27 companies that were unable to substantiate their products’ claims. “These findings show that health fraud and unapproved drug claims are rampant in the female fertility supplement marketplace,” it says.
