Add Dementia Boxed Warning to PPI Labeling: Petition

The Alliance for Natural Health, saying it is acting on behalf of its one million consumer supporters, is calling on FDA to require manufacturers of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to add a Boxed Warning to the product labeling describing the link between taking PPIs and the risk of developing dementia. The alliance petition references several studies it says demonstrate the link between regular PPI use and dementia and other health concerns.

“In light of the evidence establishing the relationship between PPIs and dementia,” the petition concludes, “it is essential that FDA update the existing Boxed Warning on human drugs to include this effect.”
