AdvaMed Bill Addresses Some FDA Shutdown Issues

AdvaMed says it is proposing legislation to help “fix” some of the disruption FDA is experiencing in collecting user fees and reviewing medical device applications during this and any future government shutdowns. Under the proposal, the trade group says, FDA could continue to collect user fees and review applications that come in with the user fees during a shutdown.

AdvaMed president Scott Whitaker said the group is concerned about the shutdown’s long-term impact on the device approval process since carryover balances are only expected to last two to three months. With an average number of device submissions to FDA reaching upwards of 300 per month, he said, a prolonged shutdown means a significant backlog.
