# Advisors Surveyed on Committee Reforms

As a follow-up to an FDA 6/13 public listening session on the agency’s use of and procedures for advisory committees, 3D Communications surveyed more than 400 current and former advisory committee members so their voices could be part of the conversation. The firm [said](https://3dcommunications.us/latest-thinking/posts/new-survey-of-400-fda-advisory-committee-members-weigh-in-on-recommendations-for-reforms/?ref=fdaweb.com) the listening session resulted in important recommendations and it was essential for committee members to weigh in on the recommendations. Survey results included:

- 95% agreed or strongly agreed that FDA should continue to have a voting question on a product’s benefits/risks when deciding whether a product should be approved;
- 86% agreed or strongly agreed that the agency should present the verbatim indication or intended use of products and ask advisors to vote on the appropriateness of the wording based on the available evidence;
- 84% agreed or strongly agreed that FDA should include subject matter experts who are treating physicians with therapeutic expertise as voting members on advisory committees;
- 48% agreed or strongly agreed that all advisory committees should have a voting patient representative and a voting consumer representative, with an additional 30% neither agreeing or disagreeing;
- 94% agreed or strongly agreed that the agency should establish clear public communication procedures explaining the reasoning when disagreeing with advisory committee votes; and
- 74% agreed or strongly agreed that FDA should share meeting materials earlier than two days before a meeting.

3D says 86% of respondents served as voting members, 56% participated in one to three advisory committee meetings in the last three years, and 21% participated in four or more meetings. Results did not vary materially when looking at responses by committee member experience, the company says.
