Advisory Committee Supports TransMedics OCS Heart System

A majority of the members of the FDA Circulatory Systems Device Advisory Panel has voted to support FDA PMA approval of the TransMedics OCS heart system for donor hearts currently utilized and unutilized for transplantation. The panel voted 12-5-1 that the benefits of the system outweigh its risks, 10-6-2 that there is reasonable assurance that the system is effective, and 9-7-2 that there is reasonable assurance of the system’s safety.

TransMedics says that the OCS Heart EXPAND trial showed that using the system resulted in successfully transplanting 84% of the extended-criteria donor hearts that are seldom used for transplants today in the U.S., using cold ischemic storage preservation.
