# Akebia Therapeutics NDA for Kidney-disease Anemia

Akebia Therapeutics has submitted an NDA for vadadustat, an investigational oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor for treating anemia due to chronic kidney disease in adult patients on or not on dialysis. The submission was prepared in collaboration with Otsuka Pharmaceutical. It includes data from over 8,000 patients across 36 clinical trials involving vadadustat.  

**The company says v**adadustat is designed to mimic the physiologic effect of altitude on oxygen availability. “At higher altitudes, the body responds to lower oxygen availability with stabilization of hypoxia-inducible factor, which can lead to increased red blood cell production and improved oxygen delivery to tissues,” it says.
