Albireo Gains Orphan Status for Liver Disease Drug

FDA has granted Albireo Pharma an orphan drug designation for A4250, an ileal bile acid transporter inhibitor for treating biliary atresia, a rare and life-threatening liver disease with no approved pharmacologic treatment option. The company describes A4250 as a first-in-class product candidate being developed to treat rare pediatric cholestatic liver diseases. It is in Phase 3 development in its initial target indication, progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis “A highly potent and selective inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter, A4250 has minimal systemic exposure and acts locally in the small intestine,” Albireo says.
