Allergan Drug Gains Infectious Disease Designation

FDA has granted Allergan a Qualified Infectious Disease Product designation and fast track status for ATM-AVI (aztreonam and avibactam) for treating complicated intra-abdominal infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and hospital-acquired bacterial pneumonia/ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia. ATM-AVI has shown activity against metallo beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negative pathogens, for which there are currently very limited treatment options, the company says. The therapy is currently in Phase 3 trials and is being jointly developed with Pfizer.
