Allergan Files De Novo App for Oculeve Eye Tear Stimulator

Allergan has filed a de novo application for the Oculeve Intranasal Tear Neurostimulator device, a handheld stimulator for temporarily increasing tear production in patients with dry eye disease due to decreased tear production. The company recently announced that two pivotal trials involving the device each met their effectiveness endpoints. The device is designed to complement the dry eye treatment Restasis, according to the company.

Dry eye disease affects over 31 million people. It can be caused by advanced age, contact lens wear, certain medications, eye diseases, other medical conditions or environmental factors, the company says. Without enough tears, the film protecting the eye can break down, creating dry spots on the cornea.
