# Alliance Seeks to Up Trump’s FDA Budget Boost

The Alliance for a Stronger FDA has submitted Congressional [testimony ](https://strengthenfda.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=564aaf3ba56647cf536ecb9b0&id=aad2bfbc4d&e=122703d8fb&ref=fdaweb.com)that asks appropriators to increase President Trump’s FY 2020 budget proposal by 15% ($60 million) for an overall increase of $418 million. The $60 million boost should go towards food safety activities, the Alliance says, such as “enhanced funding of systems for surveillance of foodborne illness and responding to outbreaks,” and “upgrades to the public health laboratories network.”

On the medical product side, the Alliance recommends a $316 million increase in budget authority program funding, which is the same amount as the President’s request. The increased funding, according to the group, should be directed to enhancing regulatory science initiatives, and strengthening scientific capabilities at the medical product centers. Additionally, it says increased funding is needed for dealing with opioids and “innovative initiatives in manufacturing, outsourcing, real world evidence, compounding, generics and rare diseases.”
