AMA Gives Award to Retired CBER Director Midthun

The American Medical Association (AMA) has presented retired CBER director Karen Midthun with the Dr. Nathan Davis Award for Outstanding Government Service. “It is an honor to recognize Dr. Midthun’s important contribution to the development of critical vaccines for adults and children to combat major outbreaks ranging from influenza to Ebola,” said AMA chair Stephen R. Permut. Midthun was one of eight honorees chosen this year to receive the award, which is named for the organization’s founding father.



 

Midthun retired at the end of 2015. She joined FDA in 1993 as a medical officer, and then became Office of Vaccines Research and Review director. Prior to the agency, she was on the faculty of the Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she was involved in the clinical development of investigational vaccines and was an attending physician.
