Amneal Generic OTC Narcan Spray OK’d

FDA has approved an Amneal Pharmaceuticals ANDA for a generic over-the-counter naloxone hydrochloride nasal spray, 4mg, (generic Narcan) for treating a drug overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl and prescription opioid medications. The nasal spray is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of a life-threatening opioid emergency by binding to opioid receptors and reversing or blocking the effects of opioids, according to the company. It can restore normal breathing within two to three minutes in a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped due to an overdose. U.S. annual commercial sales for Narcan nasal spray 4mg are about $266 million, Amneal says.
