# Animal Lab Issues at Musk Neuralink Site

FDA investigators found issues with record keeping and quality control for animals at a California animal research facility operated by **Elon Musk**’s Neuralink. Reuters [reports](https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/fda-finds-problems-animal-lab-run-by-musks-brain-implant-company-2024-02-29/?ref=fdaweb.com) the issues were found less than a month after the agency cleared Neuralink to begin testing its brain implant in humans. Based on agency inspection reports obtained by Reuters through Redica Systems, a data analytics company that obtains compliance reports through open records requests, the news service says no issues were found in an inspection at a company facility in Texas.

“These issues show a lack of attention to detail,” Reddica senior quality expert **Jerry Chapman** told Reuters.

The problems reportedly included missing calibration records for instruments used in a study and no record of calibration of seven instruments used in another study. Other issues included the failure of quality assurance officials to sign off on a final study report or document any deviations from approved protocols or standard operating procedures.

The article says former FDAer **Victor Krauthamer** told Reuters the agency has jurisdiction to inspect before approving a clinical trial and has done so in other cases. “It would have made sense for FDA to have conducted the inspection before human trial approval,” he said. “These are violations of fundamental requirements that you don’t want to worry about happening again in the human trial.”
