Anixa Bio Moving Breast Cancer Vaccine Into Phase 2

Anixa Biosciences says it is assuming full sponsorship of an IND for its experimental breast cancer vaccine as it heads towards a Phase 2 clinical trial. The IND, which had been held by the Cleveland Clinic during a recently completed Phase 1 study, is now being transferred to Anixa.

The vaccine, which was developed in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic, targets α-lactalbumin, a protein normally expressed only during lactation but found in several types of breast cancer, the company says. By training the immune system to recognize and attack cells expressing this protein, the vaccine may offer both therapeutic and preventive benefits, it says.

The Phase 1 trial demonstrated that the vaccine was well tolerated and showed promising immune responses, according to Anixa, adding that over 70% of patients evaluated so far met the trial’s immune response criteria.
