Apply for Naloxone OTC: Lawmakers

Some 30 members of the House and Senate have written to the CEOs of seven manufacturers of naloxone, asking them to apply for over-the-counter (OTC) status for the drug. In a statement, the lawmakers say that despite naloxone’s effectiveness in reversing opioid overdoses and FDA’s public support for making the product accessible OTC, drug manufacturers have resisted applying for the change.

“Making naloxone available OTC could help increase access to this life-saving medication, both at the pharmacy counter and within community organizations, and help states effectively combat the drug epidemic,” the lawmakers say.

The letters were sent to the CEOs of Pfizer, Emergent Biosolutions, Teva, Hikma, Akorn, Adamis, and Amphastar.
