Asensus Surgical Recalls Surgical System

Asensus Surgical has recalled (Class 1) its Senhance Surgical System due to the potential for the devices to malfunction. The company has identified a malfunction that has occurred and may recur involving “uncontrolled arm motion of the Laparoscope Instrument Actuator (LIA) where the LIA rotated continuously in one direction after the surgeon removed the engagement of teleoperation on the Senhance System,” according to a recall notice. It says there was no other uncontrolled arm motion observed.

Asensus Surgical issued a recall notice by mail to its consignees on 9/15. The notice explained the problem, risk to health, and requested users to stop using the devices until software version 2.7.5 is installed, according to the recall notice.

The device is intended to assist in the accurate control of laparoscopic instruments for visualization and endoscopic manipulation of tissue including grasping, cutting, blunt and sharp dissection, approximation, ligation, electrocautery, suturing, mobilization, and retraction, according to the company.
