# AstraZeneca’s Farxiga OK’d for Kidney Disease

FDA has approved AstraZeneca’s Farxiga(dapagliflozin) to reduce the risk of sustained estimated glomerular filtration rate decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with chronic kidney disease at risk of progression. Approval was based on data from the DAPA-CKD trial, which demonstrated that Farxiga, on top of standard-of-care treatment with an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker, reduced the relative risk of worsening of renal function, onset of end-stage kidney disease, or risk of cardiovascular or renal death by 39% compared to placebo in certain patients with chronic kidney disease. Farxiga is a once-daily SGLT2 inhibitor that was approved nearly a decade ago for improving glycemic control in adults with Type-2 diabetes.
