Awak Tech Gains Breakthrough Status for Dialysis Device

FDA has granted Awak Technologies a breakthrough designation for its Awak Peritoneal Dialysis device, a wearable and ultra-portable peritoneal dialysis system that uses the company’s patented sorbent technology. The device is intended to allow dialysis to be performed “on-the-go,” overcoming the challenge of long hours of therapy and connection to large-size dialysis machines, according to the company. This designation was granted by the agency after reviewing the results from the first-in-human safety trial of the Awak PD device, which was completed in 10/2018 in Singapore. The trial results showed that the device was able to efficiently remove the accumulation of toxins from the body, and patients in the trial did not experience any serious adverse events during dialysis, the company says.
