Baxter Recalls Two IV Solutions Over Insects

Baxter International has recalled two lots of intravenous (IV) solutions due to the potential presence of particulate matter (insects). The issue was identified prior to patient administration and there have been no adverse events reported to date, according to the company. Affected products are 0.9% sodium chloride injection, USP, 250 mL Viaflex plastic container, which is intended for IV use as a source of water and electrolytes and may also be used as a priming solution in hemodialysis procedures, and 70% dextrose injection (2,000 mL) USP, which is indicated as a source for calories and water for hydration. “Injecting a product containing particulate matter, in the absence of in-line filtration, may result in blockage of blood vessels, which can result in stroke, heart attack or damage to other organs such as the kidney or liver,” a recall notice says.
