Berlin Heart Recalls Excor Heart Pump

Germany-based Berlin Heart has recalled (Class 1) its Excor Pediatric Ventricular Assist Device Blood Pumps due to the potential for therapy disruption. “There is a potential for a disruption in one or more of the triple layer membranes of the ventricular assist device,” a recall notice says. The recall took place in 2018, and is now being retrospectively reported, the agency says.

The Excor device has small pumps that can be used to support the left or right or both sides of a child’s heart, according to the company. The pumps are connected to tubes (cannulas) that are sewn onto the child’s heart.
