Bill Introduced to Punish Drug Firms Over Opioids

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) and senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have introduced legislation to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable for profiting from America’s opioid epidemic. The Opioid Crisis Accountability Act of 2018 would fine drug companies for false marketing and distribution of opioids, and create criminal liability for top company executives. The measure would also:

Require drug makers to reimburse an HHS-led “Opioid Reimbursement Fund” for the negative economic impact of their products;
Reduce market exclusivity for drug companies that illegally advertise, market or distribute opioids; and
Prohibit firms that violate the law from receiving certain tax credits while establishing tax penalties.
