Bill to Ban Tianeptine as a Supplement

Sens. Richard Durbin (D-IL) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) have introduced legislation to prohibit tianeptine from being marketed to consumers. The Prohibiting Tianeptine and Other Dangerous Products Act would give FDA authority to prohibit the marketing of products such as tianeptine as dietary supplements.

A statement issued by Durbin says FDA considers tianeptine to be a “potentially dangerous substance that is not FDA-approved for any medical use but is illegally sold with claims to improve brain function and treat anxiety, depression, pain, opioid use disorder, and other conditions.” The product reportedly mimics the effects of opioids.

Companion legislation was introduced in the House by Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ).
