FDA has approved a BioCryst Pharmaceuticals supplemental NDA for Rapivab (peramivir injection) expanding the patient population for treating acute uncomplicated influenza to include patients six months and older who have been symptomatic for no more than two days. Prior to this approval, Rapivab was indicated for patients two years and older.

According to the company, the therapy is contraindicated in patients with known serious hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis to peramivir or any component of the product. Severe allergic reactions have included anaphylaxis, erythema multiforme and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. The most common adverse reaction in adults (18 years of age and older) was diarrhea.
