# Biologics Companies Cutting Production Costs: White Paper

A Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development [white paper](http://csdd.tufts.edu/news/complete%5Fstory/manufacturing%5Fstrategy%5Ffor%5Fdiverse%5Fbiologic%5Fpipelines%5Fof%5Fthe%5Ffuture?ref=fdaweb.com) says that innovative biologics manufacturing is reducing production costs while fundamentally changing how life-saving drugs are produced. The white paper is based on a 10/2015 roundtable discussion that included senior managers from biologics development companies and officials from the Department of Defense and HHS.

The paper’s lead author, **Abdullah Baaj**, CEO of Boston Oncology, says there is “an urgent need for biologics developers to share technology and collaborate to develop the manufacturing platforms, standards, and practices required to meet the demands of the future. The global impact of the shift in innovative biologics manufacturing could be groundbreaking.”

Highlights from the paper include: 

- · biologics makers are increasingly turning to manufacturing as a way to contain costs while increasing market quality and adapting to market demands;
- · continuous and real-time manufacturing can improve the government’s emergency preparedness to respond to real crises; and
- globalization and manufacturing decentralization have created significant investment opportunities for biologics manufacturing in emerging and developing markets.
