# Bipartisan Generic Drug Bill Introduced

Eleven House members led by Reps. **Kurt Schrader** (D-OR) and **Gus Bilirakis** (R-FL) have introduced legislation they say will lower the cost of prescription drugs by providing review voucher incentives to drug makers to develop generic drugs when competition does not already exist or when there is a drug shortage. “The [bill](https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/749?ref=fdaweb.com) (H.R. 729) will bring new generic drugs to the market when there might otherwise be little incentive to compete because there is a small patient population for the drug or the cost of development might be too high,” Schrader says in a [statement](http://schrader.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=390705&ref=fdaweb.com). The statement discusses several drugs that in recent years have been the subject of complaints that prices increased astronomically such as Turing’s Daraprim and Mylan’s EpiPen.

Schrader says the bill would incentivize companies to develop new generic drugs by creating a new priority review voucher for generic drugs that would be awarded to manufacturers that bring a drug to market where there is no current competition.
