BMS Closing Opdivo Brain Tumor Program

Bristol-Myers Squibb is shutting down its Opdivo (nivolumab) program to use the immuno-onology drug in treating newly-diagnosed brain cancer patients. Endpoints News reports that Opdivo plus standard-of-care temozolomide (Merck’s Temodar) plus radiation performed no better than placebo in extending overall survival in patients with newly-diagnosed MGMT-positive glioblastoma multiforme who previously had their tumor surgically removed.

The report says an independent data monitoring committee had told BMS its Phase 3 Checkpoint-548 study would not meet the primary endpoint due to a high number of deaths in the overall patient pool and a subset of patients with no baseline corticosteroid use.
