Boehringer on Improving Informed Consent Guide

Boehringer Ingelheim says an FDA draft guidance on key information and facilitating understanding in informed consent could better emphasize the use of plain language with more specific examples and techniques to ensure understanding across diverse patient populations. The company’s comment letter also calls for:

highlighting more prominently the use of visual aids like diagrams or flowcharts to convey complex information;
using iterative feedback to encourage continuous improvement based on participant feedback; and
addressing or emphasizing the selection of wording that is culturally appropriate and inclusive of gender identities and biological sexes.

The company also offers specific line-by-line comments.
