# Boston Scientific Brain Stimulation Software OK’d

FDA has approved Boston Scientific’s Vercis Neural Navigator 5 Software, which is used as part of the Vercise Genus Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) System to provide clinicians with with what the company calls “simple and actionable data for efficient programming” in treating people with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor. The fourth-generation Vercise Genus DBS System is designed, it says, to treat Parkinson’s symptoms by delivering targeted electrical stimulation through surgically-implanted leads in the brain connected to an implantable pulse generator.

“The ability to see the precise placement of DBS Systems enables us to target therapy to meet individual needs,” a [company release](https://news.bostonscientific.com/Boston-Scientific-Receives-FDA-ApprovNext-Innovation-Image-Guided-Programming-Software-Deep-Brain-Stimulation?ref=fdaweb.com) says. “The new features in the Vercise Neural Navigator 5 are expected to help further reduce the time needed to adjust stimulation and minimize potential side effects, allowing us to optimize treatment benefits for each patient.” The software tool has been demonstrated to reduce programming time by 56%, and provide real-time visualization and stimulation of each person’s unique brain anatomy, it says.

Boston Scientific also says the software includes an enhanced user interface that displays patient data in a simplified format and gives clinicians access to advanced settings for increased therapy delivery. It is also designed to enable more flexibility to better manage the evolving needs of individual patients at any stage of their condition.
