Breast Cancer Drug Combination Doesn’t Work: FDA

FDA says that a clinical study shows that Genentech’s Tecentriq (atezolizumab) in combination with paclitaxel does not work to treat patients with previously untreated inoperable locally advanced or metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC). An agency statement says Tecentriq in combination with Abraxane is not approved for use in breast cancer.

However, it says, Tecentriq in combination with Celgene’s Abraxane (paclitaxel protein-bound) is currently approved to treat some specified adults with mTNBC as determined by an agency-approved test. Continued approval of Tecentriq in combination with Abraxane may be contingent on the proven benefit of the treatment in additional trials, the agency says.
