Cancer Patients Have Greater Covid Risk: OCE Analysis

The FDA Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) says that people with cancer are at an increased risk of more serious outcomes from Covid-19. In data analyzed with Synapse, OCE also found that there are inequities for Black Americans and those of lower socioeconomic means.

“It’s imperative that we continue to rapidly examine real-world data to address the urgent healthcare challenges brought on by this pandemic,” says OCE assistant director Harpreet Singh.

The analysis found that cancer patients who also have Covid-19 are more likely (compared to those without Covid-19) to have (1) other health conditions such as kidney failure, obesity, and heart disease; (2) increased rates of hospitalization and invasive mechanical ventilation; and (3) a 16-fold increased mortality risk.
