# Cassava Sciences Under Criminal Investigation: Reuters

The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into whether Cassava Sciences manipulated research results for its experimental Alzheimer’s drug simufilam, *Reuters* reports exclusively, based on information from two sources. The news service [says](https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/exclusive-cassava-sciences-faces-us-criminal-probe-tied-alzheimers-drug-sources-2022-07-27/?ref=fdaweb.com) it was told those doing the investigation specialize in examining whether companies or individuals have misled or defrauded investors, government agencies, or consumers.

The sources indicated the investigation was based on a 2021 [petition](https://www.fdaweb.com/fda-denies-attorneys-simufilam-petition/) filed by an attorney representing two doctors who said the firm’s clinical trials of simufilam should be halted while FDA looked into their allegation that published studies on clinical trials involving simufilam contained data misrepresentations and images of experiments that appeared to have been manipulated by photo-editing software. FDA said the petition was not the proper forum for such a complaint and denied it on that basis.

Cassava attorney **Kate Watson Moss** told *Reuters* the company “vehemently denies any and all allegations of wrongdoing.” She said Cassava has never been charged with a crime because it never has engaged in criminal conduct. Company president **Remi Barbier** additionally said in a statement that the government’s probe was previously disclosed in 2021\. “I have said from the onset that allegations of research misconduct are false,” he said. “No government agency has informed us that it has found supporting evidence of research misconduct or any other wrong-doing, and for good reason – there is no supporting evidence for allegations of research misconduct.”

The company also is facing scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission over the allegations contained in the petition to FDA.
