# CDER Acting Head Corrigan-Curay Leaving in July

CDER acting director **Jacqueline Corrigan-Curay** has decided to retire and will leave her post next month. After almost nine years at the agency, Corrigan-Curay said in an email to staff that her “incredibly challenging” decision was made more difficult by the fondness she has developed for advancing public health and working closely with others at the agency who share a similar commitment.

She joined FDA 10/2016 as CDER’s director for the Office of Medical Policy. In that role, she led the development, coordination, and implementation of medical policy programs and strategic initiatives, according to her online agency bio. In January, she was moved from the principal deputy Center director to acting director after then-CDER director **Patrizia Cavazzoni** unexpectedly announced her early retirement effective two days before the new administration took hold.

Prior to joining CDER, Corrigan-Curay served as supervisory medical officer at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. She also previously served as director of the Office of Biotechnology Activities, Office of Science Policy at NIH, where she was executive secretary of the NIH Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee.

These have been challenging times for FDA leadership, with many who have been forced out of their positions or who’ve chosen to leave voluntarily. Just last week, CBER Office of Therapeutic Products director **Nicole Verdun** and her deputy **Rachael Anatol** were pushed out of the Center and placed on administrative leave in the latest shake-up at FDA ([see story](https://www.fdaweb.com/top-2-fda-cell-gene-therapies-officials-pushed-out/)).
