Circulating Tumor DNA Seen Useful in Cancer Treatment

Cancer researchers from organizations and universities worldwide say their pooled analysis of five independent lung cancer clinical trials demonstrated consistent and robust associations between reductions in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and outcomes. Writing in the open-source journal JSO Precision Oncology, the researchers say “ctDNA may serve as an important tool in clinical development and an early indicator of treatment benefit.”

The researchers say they wanted to determine whether changes in ctDNA can reflect clinical benefit across multiple, independent studies of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

The article says future studies should look at other tumor types, stages, and drug classes.
