Class 1 Recall on Omnipod Insulin Delivery System

FDA has classified as Class 1 an Insulet recall of its Omnipod DASH Insulin Management System due to battery issues. The device is used to deliver insulin at set and variable rates to manage diabetes in people who need insulin.

According to an agency notice, the recall was initiated after the company received reports about battery swelling and leakage, and extreme overheating. “Users could be exposed to battery fluid and extreme heat, including the potential for an explosion and/or fire, which could lead to serious injury or death,” FDA says.Insulet reports that is has received 455 complaints involving the issues, including three fires, adding that there have been no reports of injuries or deaths.
