CNS Pharma Seeks Orphan Status for Berubicin

CNS Pharmaceuticals has requested an FDA orphan drug designation for its lead product berubicin for treating glioblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of cancer. The request is based on Phase 1 trial data showing a significant improvement in progression free survival, the company says. A Phase 2 trial evaluating the effect of berubicin in patients with glioblastoma is being planned for later this year.

Berubicin is described as an anthracycline, a class of anticancer agents that are among the most powerful chemotherapy drugs and effective against more types of cancer than any other drug class. “Anthracyclines are designed to utilize natural processes to induce deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage in targeted cancer cells by interfering with the action of topoisomerase II, a critical enzyme enabling cell proliferation,” the company says.
