Cochlear Osia 2 Hearing Implant Cleared

FDA has cleared a Cochlear Ltd. 510(k) for the Cochlear Osia 2 System, an active osseointegrated steady-state hearing implant. The device uses digital piezoelectric stimulation to bypass damaged areas of the natural hearing system to send sound vibrations directly to the inner ear (cochlea), the company says. “The thin profile and monolithic design of the implant helps to simplify surgery for the system,” it says. It is indicated to treat hearing loss associated with an array of conditions including chronic otitis media, otosclerosis and atresia/microtia.
