Comments Sought on Proposed NDC Revision

Comments are due by 11/22 on an FDA proposal published 7/25 to expand the National Drug Code (NDC) from 10 to 12 digits. An 11/17 CDER Small Business and Industry Assistance Webinar explains the reasons for the proposed change and describes the five-year implementation period that would start after the approval of a final regulation.

CDER Drug Registration and Listing Branch lead consumer safety officer Leyla Rahjou-Esfandiary says FDA believes starting the process of moving to a 12-digit NDC now will minimize the impact of the change and eliminate confusion in the future.

As part of the proposal, FDA would amend the linear barcode requirement to provide greater flexibility.
