Committee Backs Moderna Flu Vaccine

The FDA Vaccines and Related Biologic Products Advisory Committee has voted to recommend approval of Moderna’s mFlusiva mRNA flu shot. The Associated Press reports the company is seeking approval for the vaccine’s use in people ages 50-64, along with authorization for use in those aged 65 and older, while Moderna conducts additional testing.

In advance of the advisory committee meeting, FDA reviewers had issued a briefing document with a more positive outlook on the vaccine than many observers had expected. The agency had issued a February Refusal-to-File letter attributed to concerns that the company’s Phase 3 trial used an inadequate control group to demonstrate efficacy.
