Companies Recall Ranitidine, Nizatidine

FDA says Appco Pharma and Denton Pharma (doing business as Northwind Pharmaceuticals) are recalling prescription ranitidine (Zantac) tablets because they may contain unacceptable levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). An agency recall notice says FDA has advised companies to recall ranitidine if testing shows NDMA levels above the acceptable daily intake (96 nanograms/day or 0.32 parts per million). The notice says the agency posted the results of its testing ranitidine samples and has asked companies to conduct their own laboratory testing.

FDA also announced Mylan’s recall of three lots of prescription nizatidine capsules (Axid), a commonly prescribed antacid that is chemically similar to ranitidine, that may contain unacceptable levels of NDMA.
