Companion Animal Oncology Drug Guidance

FDA has issued a guidance, Oncology Drugs for Companion Animals, with recommendations for sponsors of investigational oncology drugs for use in companion animals such as cats, dogs, and horses. The document discusses the contents of the target animal safety, effectiveness, and labeling sections of a new animal drug application. It also includes recommendations on how to address human user safety concerns. If a multi-drug regimen is being proposed, the guidance says, the sponsor should contact the Center for Veterinary Medicine to discuss the product development plan.

Guidance contents cover effectiveness (dosage characterization, field effectiveness study, and reasonable expectation of effectiveness), target animal safety (multiple levels of exposure, duration, and evaluation of toxicity), and human user safety.
